Father Daughter Dance

Helaina and Jim attended the Father Daughter dance again this year.  It's a fundraiser for Golisano Children's Hospital so it's a fun time for daughter and Daddy and a good cause to support (especially since Helaina will soon be a patient there for yet another upcoming surgery).
She was so excited about going since she had such a blast last year.  We did her hair in french braids, picked out special jewelry, wore her shimmery sequined outfit that she absolutely loves, strapped on her "shoes with the heel" and finally slipped on her wrist corsage that I got from the florist.  She was a hot pink shimmery beauty.
I made them pose for a few pictures but Helaina was so anxious to get going that she growled at me every time I said "Wait, one more shot."
Awww, thought this would be a cute shot, and it is.
Yah, there's a balloon guy there and check out this insane balloon hat - while holding a bouquet of balloons.  She also came home with a pink balloon doggie.  Yup, still balloon obsessed.

Busting a move.  She loves twirling in that skirt because of the way it moves as she twirls.
FINALLY, tooth number 4 was pulled.  We tried 4 different times over the last few weeks to pull it but it was a stubborn tooth.  Helaina was SO anxious to get it out, more so than any other tooth that was looset, probably because it is her first upper tooth she'd lose and she wanted to see the big "gap".
President's Day was the day.  Jim was off from work and she woke up that morning and as usual "Check my tooth.  Is it ready yet, is it ready, can we pull it?"  Yup, it was dangling darn good.  Jim had first whack at it.  He grabbed the tooth with a tissue and gave it a yank but no dice (I think he was afraid of hurting her).  Helaina tried next with no success either.  "Oh for Pete's sake" I said as I grabbed the tissue.  "It's hanging below the gum line by a few threads.  Are you ready?  One, two, three!" and with one good tug it was out and in the tissue.
Excitement beyond belief.  She's very proud of her new gap.  The other front tooth is loose too but if it's anything like the other one, it will still be in there for a while.

Busy, busy month

February is always a busy month that flies by, with the biggest event closing out the month - Helaina's birthday.  Prior to that there's Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, the annual father daughter dance, mid-winter break from school - it's hectic, tons of fun for Helaina and exhausting for Jim and I.  This year we threw another event into the mix - Helaina's first snowmobile ride.
Let's just say that the smile on her face says it all.  We knew that we had a daredevil on our hands and that she'd probably love snowmobiling, and we were so right.  Three rides in all and she wanted
more.
So excited just before her first ride.  I was a bit nervous though.  I had been on a snowmobile once in my life (in my earlier more reckless years) and it didn't end well.  The driver went up a hill and tipped the snowmobile backwards over on us.  I walked back to the house and that was it.  First and last time on one ever.
She went around the trails twice with her first rider.  Loved, loved, loved it.  We went in for a drink and cookies then she went for another ride.
This time the local fire department drover her around in their sled and she got to sit down during the ride.  She said she liked this ride because they "went in the forest".

Helaina picked this snowmobile for her third ride.  Liked it because it had the word "Viper" on it and she loves snakes.  Snazzy red helmet too.
This driver was told by a volunteer that  "she likes to ride" so he took her through the forest on a longer ride.  Helaina told us on the car ride home:  "I was thinking in my own mind 'Is this guy crazy?' he's going so fast!"
Helaina got to climb up into a fire engine and got lots of goodies from the fire fighters.
Our little speed demon sporting her pink fire helmet.  Pretty in pink.

Helaina loves books and going to the library.  We read to her a lot and it's pretty cool that she can now read to us.  Her reading ability is remarkable and amazes us more every day.  I was in the kitchen the other day and I heard Helaina talking to her baby doll so I stopped what I was doing and watched.  She got a book and a blanket and got comfortable on the couch with her arm around her doll then started reading the book to her.
Helaina's learning about frogs in Science class so we checked out a book from the library on frogs and she is fascinated with it.  Guess she thought her dolly would like to learn about frogs too.  "And the Daddy frog holds on to the Mommy frog  real close when she lays her 4,000 eggs.  See the picture?"  Oh boy.....
Next day, same thing - only this time it was her Ice Age Continental Drift book.  She's a funny kid for sure.

Gung Hay Fat Choy, I think

Welcome Year of the Snake, which just happens to be one of Helaina's favorite critters.  She even sleeps with her purple and black rattlesnake plushie every night.  It lies right along side her and even gets tucked in under the covers next to her.  We celebrated as we always do by going out to dinner at  a Chinese restaurant, of course.
Decked out in luck red for our outing.  She slammed down wonton soup and a combo plate of chicken lo mein and rice.  Like the blog says, noodle girl gone wild.

We made goodie bags for Helaina to give her classmates.  I dipped fortune cookies in chocolate, decorated them with sprinkles and tied each one individually with a piece of red yarn.  By the time I made enough for family, friends, teachers, school office workers and her classmates, I think I did about 60 cookies in all.

Besides the fortune cookie, the bags included noisemakers, red envelopes with chocolate coins, little toy snakes (that I couldn't believe I found), and a small notepad.
Along with a book about Chinese New Year to read to the class, Helaina brought in some Chinese money, her Year of the Dog silk scarf and her Chinese drum to show.  She wore her beautiful pink silk outfit to school too.

Meet the newest members of our family - Peaches and Ellie (named after the wooley mamoths in the Ice Age movies).  About 3 weeks ago we told Helaina that she could get a goldfish - thought it would keep her from hounding us about a puppy (we were wrong).  We went to the petstore with our over-excited child and found that the goldfish were so small that we could get 2 for our gallon-sized bowl (more squeals and shrieks).  15cents a fish - now that's a cheap pet.  The bowl set-up cost more than that.  Notice the "Welcome home Peaches" sign Helaina made and taped to the back of the bowl.
The funniest thing was when Zoey noticed the bowl with the fishies swimming around.
As you can see, she was VERY interested.  Still is, somewhat.  For at least a few weeks after we got the fish you'd find her jumping up on the table or counter, staring them down and even trying to bat at them with her paw through the bowl.  She's since lost most interest in them but I still put a lid on the bowl when we leave the house or go to bed.  Cats, you know - can't trust them a bit.

Yo Gabba Gabba, what?

Daddy scored big time when he bought Yo Gabba Gabba tickets for Helaina for Christmas.  She was SO excited when we got to the theater for the show a few weeks ago.  She could hardly hold her excitement in.  She was squealing, jumping, smiling - it was great to see her so excited.
A picture before the show in front of the DJ Lance Rock backdrop.
"Let's get the sillies out!  Let's get the sillies out!"  Unbelievably, I know all the words to all the songs they perform.  I've seen the TV show more times than I care to admit.
You would not believe the shrieks, screams and clapping from the audience full of kids when the show started and DJ Lance Rock's image came up on the huge screen, just the way each TV show starts.
Then when he walked out on stage the noise was even louder.  You'd think a rock star had just come on stage instead of a dude in a ridiculous orange outfit - but then again, his name is DJ Lance Rock.
One by one each of the 5 characters came on stage to clapping and screams of delight.  Here's Fufa, Muno and Brobee.
Here's Helaina standing up and dancing to the beat.  The kids were all dancing and clapping and singing.  The most amazing thing was that all the parents, including us, were singing the songs too.  Not only did the kids know all the words by heart, but the parents too.
All 5 of the Yo Gabba Gabba gang, including Tuti and Plex the yellow robot.  "Hold still ... wiggle wiggle wiggle go!  Wiggle wiggle wiggle go!"
"There's a party in my tummy - so yummy, so yummy! Green beans want to come to the party in my tummy?"

The show was really good.  Helaina loves it because they sing and dance a lot, but parents like it because they teach a different lesson in each show - don't hit your friends, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, don't litter, be nice to bugs, share with your friends.  It's extremely bizarre with the strange characters, but that's what makes it so unique.  When the show was over there were a lot of kids crying because they wanted to see more.  Was it worth $132 for 3 tickets?  Definately!
I was looking through some old pictures of Helaina right after we brought her home from China and I found this one of her staring at the TV screen watching Muno on Yo Gabba Gabba!  See, she even liked the show when she was 2 years old!

Snow Day

Helaina had her first snow day last Friday - the first one in 2 years.  Last year was the winter of no snow, but I think the snow on the ground now is finally here to stay (hopefully at least until Saturday because Helaina has something very special coming up that depends on the presence of snow).
Our snow day started out with breakfast in front of the tv.  She requested her favorite:  waffle with peanut butter (yummy melty goodness - she got that from me) and turkey sausages.  Helaina's breakfast of champions.
We had a very busy day.  We played board games, read library books, watched some movies, did some crafts.  The weather got better as the morning went on so we met Jim for lunch then went to the library for more books and movies.  After we got home it was beauty salon time.  I braided her hair - 9 braids in all.  We were going for the Bo Derek "10" look.  She was thrilled.
Moved from hair styling right into nails, complete with 3 different colors of polish with polka dots and smiley faces.
Bedtime brought the unbraiding of the hair and Helaina was, well, you can see by her glowing face, very happy with the wavy hair.
Helaina loves school so much and we love all the schoolwork papers she brings home daily (and there are LOTS).  A recent school project asked for each child to donate a small amount of money  to a fund that would be sent to Hurricaine Sandy victims, and to write a note telling how they raised the money.  Helaina sent in $5 and wrote a note saying it was money she got for wearing her headgear to bed every night.  Her teacher must have liked the note because she had her re-write it, draw a (quick!)picture and sent it to the principal.  Helaina's note was selected and published in the school newspaper along with others - all displayed on the page above.  Too funny.  Looks like she's got a mustache, but it's the headgear on her face along with a butterfly and a package of rubber bands.
Using her spelling words to write sentences.  Her printing and spelling is improving.
They've been doing a unit in Sciense on ants and bees.  Science is Helaina's favorite subject and she remembers what she learns.  I'm always impressed with what she comes home and tells us.

Next post, our night out with DJ Lance Rock and his pals.  What a blast!

Back to the routine 2013

After Jim being on "vacation" (I use the word loosely) 11 days at home with Helaina and I during the Christmas break, I'm fairly certain he was ready to get back to work on January 2nd to escape the madness - and for some peace and quiet.  It's always a fun and exciting time around the house, but we're constantly doing something or going somewhere with Helaina, or organizing and trying to regain control of the ever-constant mess of holiday toys.
Christmas morning opening up her Santa pillow pet.
Her first boy "Barbie doll".  Check out that face.  It didn't take her long to remove his swimsuit to see what was underneath.
Jim came up with the idea for Helaina's "big" gift this year.  He thought a karaoke machine would be perfect for our little singer who belts out a tune wherever and whenever (she'll actually sing while she's on the potty).  Loves holding a microphone and hearing the sound of her own voice.  It's a pink Hellow Kitty machine, of course.  When she opened the gift she announced "Now I can rock the house!"  Lucky us.
For some reason, Helaina likes rubys now.  So of course, Daddy got her ruby red earrings and I got a pair to match, too.  She's been obsessed with jewelry lately (too bad for Jim).  You can see the 3 rings she's wearing on one hand.  Santa brought them to her and she loves them.
Jim surprised Helaina with tickets to Yo Gabba Gabba Live.  If you've got young kids, you know all about Muno, Fufa, Tootie, Plex and Brobie.  Love the look on her face when she finally found the name of the show on the tickets and realized what they were for.

Later Christmas day out at Aunt Barb's house.  More gifts, excitement and madness.

Sweet little feefee with her cuddly pillow pet we gave her.

On New Year's Eve day Jim took Helaina to the "Happy Zoo Year" party at the zoo (while I stayed home and continued to organize the chaos).  We bought a zoo membership this year and really have taken advantage of it.
At noon they had a disco ball drop ...
... followed by a sparkling apple juice toast.

One of the tigers happened to be up close to the glass.  Always a nice surprise to get the close up look at them.  I'm always impressed by how huge their paws are.

The lions trying to stay warm in their den, surrounded by mountains of snow (which will probably all melt this weekend with the 50+degree weather that is predicted).

Funny Helaina
Helaina loves board games and she got Party Monopoly Junior from Uncle Jack.  It was her first time playing any sort of Monopoly and she loves it (of course she does - it involves money).  Jim was playing Monopoly with Helaina at the kitchen table and I had to run out on an errand.  They were on the second game and Jim was tired of playing so he said to Helaina "Why don't you go to Rite Aid with Mommy?"  Helaina's response:  "Dad, you're just saying that to get me out of your hair."  How perceptive of her!!

Helaina is a gassy little gal, if you get my drift.  Let's just say that she "toots" a lot - more than normal we would say.  Doesn't seem to bother her (just the people around her).  At least she always says "excuse me" when she passes gas.  Helaina also likes hard boiled eggs.  She had one for a snack one afternoon.  That night after dinner, right at the kitchen table, she let out a big toot and immediately announced (while waving her hand in front of her nose) "Yewww!  Hard boiled egg toots are the worst!!!"   Cracked us up.

Helaina was looking through a Disney brochure and she came upon this Cinderella bed.  I was in the kitchen and she came running in up to me, all excited to show me what she found.  "Look, Mom. A Cinderella bed."  I said "Wow, how beautiful.  And it fits over the entire bed."  Her response:  "Yah.  I bet that costs a fortune - and tax too!"   And tax too?  Where does she get this stuff from?  Just proves that kids are always listening in on adult conversations even when you think they aren't.
